WITH BLOOD: When his knife is unsheathed, he assumes a (mostly) corporeal form that appears subject to the same natural, physical laws as other living beings (e.g., will fall off ledges due to gravity; will go 'OOF' and fly backwards if hit by a big ol' hammer) although he can choose to become intangible (shifting through solids) and float if he wants to. Usually he only wants to when he knows being intangible or floating will be annoying to others.

When his knife is sheathed—BLOOP—back into the knife he goes. While aware of things happening within the immediate vicinity of the knife, he's trapped inside it. He is completely subject to the whims of whoever controls the knife. He cannot move on into the afterlife, and if the owner of the knife is injured, they can choose to transfer their injury to him and he just has to take that shit. It won't kill him (been there, done that) but he can feel pain and get weak like anyone else. Sucks big time.

NO BLOOD?: Jiayuan is just ("""just""") an enchanted knife. He can make his face appear in the reflective surface of the blade and make the metal glimmer a little bit, but otherwise he's just some guy in a knife.

🔪 Born in 1921, which was a pretty bad year. Parents fled from imperial Japan, moving from Korea to China, only for imperial Japan to imperialize China right after. Effectively was a child soldier but felt his childhood was pretty okay and doesn't have any emotional hang-ups about it. To him, constant conflict is just normal.

🔪 Died in 1945, spirit was trapped in his knife by dark sorcery. Became the fourth Knife of Righteousness ever, very cool, thanks.

🔪 Never mind, he hates this. Made to do the bidding of several masters and mistresses, no time for his own personal hobbies, like making doodles or listening to the latest music. Also, nobody lets him have his little snacks. It's not like he needs nourishment, it's just nice to snack.

🔪 At one point, was the knife that Marita Lorenz slipped into her overnight bag on her way to assassinate Fidel Castro. Jiayuan was not really sure about how the whole righteousness thing would have landed there, but luckily he didn't have to make the call because she got too horny to carry out her assassination anyway. That was a weird night for Jiayuan.

🔪 Was yoinked up by the Adventure Society sometime in the early 90s and has been collecting dust in a corner of the Material Archives since then.

🔪 Is adamant that his most recent master was Patrick Bateman. Yes, that Patrick Bateman. Acts like American Psycho is a biopic and goes, 'That wouldn't have happened if I'd been there. I would have stopped him.' It's unclear if Jiayuan is just really committed to the bit, his memory is messed up, or Patrick Bateman was a real guy and Jiayuan hung out with him in the late 80s.

🔪 Also insists that he met Mariah Carey, almost went on a date with her, and then they decided just to be friends because he was a knife. Honestly sometimes he just lies for the hell of it.

miscellaneous trivia

🔪 Has a tendency to smash glass cases (e.g., vending machines, jewelry displays at the mall) to take the contents for himself. Acts very surprised when people are all, "HEY! YOU CAN'T DO THAT!" Goes like this: 😯. Every. Single. Time. 😯😯😯

🔪 Loves to be let out of his knife; behaves very badly outside of his knife. Probably should not be let out of his knife.

🔪 Has a shirt that says "NOT A DANGER TO OTHERS" on it and wears it when he's under contract (bound by dark blood magic to the current owner of the knife), so people know he's not a danger to others. Unless his master wants him to be a danger. Then he's a danger.
